Great Big Stuff
With the Occupy Wall Street protestors still going at it, one can only think: “Why not look for a job, anywhere, rather than freeze in this weather?” This is the third month protestors are rallying the Wall Street area and what have they accomplished so far? The best thing I heard was a former protestor decided to change her tactic; rather than walk around with a protest sign, she walked around with a sign that said hire me. After a few weeks, she did eventually get hired. What will become of the protestors still there in the parks of lower Manhattan?
Recently I saw my brother and some of his friends in the play Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. One song/line that caught my attention was “Great Big Stuff.” One character was constantly looking for “Great Big Stuff.” These comprised of materialistic things; cars, jewels, clothing, homes, etc. He was a comical character but the role really made me sit back and appreciate the “Great Big Stuff” in my life. While most of us complain about things we don’t have or things that happened to us, we should think about the following:
“If you woke up this morning with more health than illness…you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation … you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
If you can attend an ideological meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death…you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep…you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace … you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.
If your parents are still alive and still married … you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada.
If you can read this article of perspective, you are more fortunate than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.”
I am just thankful for my great big stuff; my family, friends, and life in America. Hey, I guess it’s not that bad after all OWS ☺.

That certainly does open one’s eyes to how fortunate we really are. Thanks!
